How Midsummer Night: A Memoir of Friendship and Loss, Janet Somerville – When the author’s friend and colleague is diagnosed with a rare inoperable brain cancer, she documents his life to share with his wife and daughters.

Love H: The Letters of Helene Dorn and Hettie Jones, Hettie Jones – This is my favorite book on friendship. It’s an intimate look at a 40-year relationship (1963-2004) that follows the ups and downs of two women who led very interesting lives.

 Friends: Voices On The Gift Of Companionship, Amy Lou Jenkins – Twenty-four authors share their experiences with friendship.

Memoirs About Women in the Military

Janice and I were in the U.S. Army from 1976 through 1981 and 1982, respectively. When Tough Cookies Crumble talks about our experiences as soldiers in a time when the number of females in the military was very low. The following memoirs describe the experiences of women in the military in various time periods.

One Woman’s Army: A Black Officer Remembers the WAC, Charity Adams Earley – Charity Earley was the first black woman commissioned as an officer. She led the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only organization of black women to serve overseas during World War II.

Every Day is a Gift: A Memoir, Tammy Duckworth – This is a must read about an inspiring woman and a pioneer in the military and politics.

The Fine Art of Camouflage, Lauren Kay Johnson – Lauren Johnson followed in the steps of her mother, who deployed in the Army Reserves in Operation Desert Storm. She joined after 9/ll and went to Afghanistan.

A Higher Standard: Leadership Strategies from America’s First Female Four-Star General, Ann Dunwoody – This trailblazer details her evolution as a soldier and reveals the core leadership principles that led to her historic appointment. The book includes practical advice that anyone can use to lead.

Shoot Like a Girl: One Woman’s Dramatic Fight in Afghanistan and on the Home Front, Mary Jennings Hegar – Air National Guard Major Hegar served three tours in Afghanistan flying combat search-and-rescue missions. Her bravery earned her a Purple Heart and distinguished Flying Cross with Valor.

Love My Rifle More Than You: Young and Female in the U.S. Army, Kayla Williams – An honest look at the experience of a woman in Iraq and the challenges she faced.

Forgotten Warriors: The Long History of Women in Combat, Sarah Percy – Although this is not a memoir, it provides an important history of women in combat around the world.

The Fly Girls Revolt: The Story of the Women Who Kicked Open the Door to Fly in Combat, Eileen Bjorkman – The story of the women military aviators in the 1970s and 1980s who opened the door to fly in combat in 1993. The paperback of this book is not available on Bookshop.

Stories from the Front: Pain, Betrayal, and Resilience on the MST Battlefield, Colonel Lisa Carrington Firmin – Colonel Lisa Firmin talks about her own experiences with military sexual trauma and shares the stories of 13 other soldiers.

I’m Still Standing: From Captive US Soldier to Free Citizen, Shoshana Johnson – The story of the first woman prisoner of war in Iraq.

Living with Trauma, Finding the Light Again – M. Struemph – The author talks about how people can become a predator’s target and the obstacles within the military to justice. She also talks about her path to healing.

The Grit Factor: Courage, Resilience, and Leadership in the Most Male-Dominated Organization in the World, Shannon Huffman Polson – One of the Army’s first female attack helicopter pilots talks about talks about what it takes to succeed in a man’s world. She also shares the stories of other women who have led at the highest levels of the military.

It’s My Country Too: Women’s Military Stories from the American Revolution to Afghanistan, Jerri Bell and Tracy Crow – Stories about women who served from the Revolutionary War to current conflicts, in their own words.

Formation: A Woman’s Memoir of Rape, Rage, and War, Ryan Leigh Dostie – A look at the life of a female soldier in the early 2000s, her service in Iraq and her life after she left the military. Like too many women who served, the sexual assault she endured went unpunished and she continued to suffer as a result long after she left the military.

Corporal Cannon: A Female Marine in Afghanistan, Savannah Cannon – An honest account of prejudice and the mistreatment of a female Marine deployed to Afghanistan in 2010.

Beyond the Call: Three Women on the Front Lines in Afghanistan, Eileen Rivers – This book highlights the role of women in the war in Afghanistan. It shows the value that women bring to combat environments.

Sirens: How to Pee Standing Up – An Alarming Memoir of Combat and Coming Back Home, Laura Naylor Colbert – Laura Colbert describes her experience as a Military Police Officer in the Army National Guard from 2001 to 2009, including her deployed for over a year to Baghdad.

Life at Camp: Combating the Sexism We Tolerate, and Why the Military Should Take the Lead, Doris J. Sumner – A detailed look at one woman’s decades long fight against sexism in the National Guard.

Enduring What Cannot Be Endured: Memoir of a Woman Medical Aide in the Philippines in World War II, Dorothy Dore Dowlen – The author was the daughter of a British soldier and a Philippine woman, who endured the brutal occupation by the Japanese in World War II. She studied as a nurse so she could help the United States Armed Forces.

Eyes Right: Confessions from a Woman Marine, Tracy Crow – Tracy Crow joined the Marines after she graduated from high school in 1977. In spite of the gender inequality and harassment she experienced, she moved up the ranks as a Marine journalist to become a Warrant Officer.

A Shoe in the Sand: A Look Behind for the Journey Ahead – A Memoir of the Gulf War, Liz Ciufo – Major Ciufo served as an Army Intelligence Officer during the Persian Gulf War deployed to Saudi Arabia.

Chasing the Daylight: One Woman’s Journey to Becoming a U.S. Army Intelligence Officer, Joanna Rakowski – A former ballerina from Poland joins the Army and describes the mental, physical, and emotional challenges she faced in her training in the early 2000s to become an Intelligence Officer.

Women in the Army: Memoirs from a First Generation W.A.A.C. to W.A.C., March 1943 – December 1945, Susan Hubbard Rudd – Susan Hubbard and her best friend joined the Army in early 1943. She faced physical, emotional, and intellectual challenges for the next two and a half years.

Yes Sir – MA’AM: A female career officer’s reflections! Valerie Perea – The author describes her experiences as an officer in the Army, including the integration of women into all male units in the early 1970s.

Visiting Hours: A Memoir of Friendship and Murder, Amy Butcher – Amy Butcher stands by her friend after he suffered an acute psychotic break that led to the murder of his girlfriend.

How Now, Butterfly?: A Memoir Of Murder, Survival, and Transformation, Charity Lee and Brian Whitney – Charity Lee’s life is scarred by violence from the time her mother hires someone to murder her father, to the murder of her four-year-old daughter by her thirteen-year-old son. Surviving Murder: A True-Crime Memoir, Linda Principe – Linda Principe writes about the murder and decapitation of her aunt and uncle by their son, her cousin. She finds herself their only advocate for justice.

My Midnight Years: Surviving Jon Burge’s Police Torture Ring and Death Row, Ronald Kitchen, Thai Jones, Logan McBride – Richard Kitchen was tortured by Jon Burge and his Midnight Crew until he confessed to a gruesome homicide he didn’t commit. After cofounding the Death Row 10, he was eventually exonerated and they filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department, Mayor Richard Daley, and the Cook County State’s Attorney.

High Achiever: The Incredible True Story of One Addict’s Double Life, Tiffany Jenkins – Tiffiny Jenkins’ opiod addiction took her from captain of her high school cheerleading squad to 120 days in a Florida jail facing 20 felonies.

the weight of air: a story of the lies about addiction and the truth about recovery, David Poses – David Poses went through detox, inpatient rehab, twelve-step programs, and a halfway house, but could not overcome mental illness and addiction until he found an evidence-based treatment that saved his life.

Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget, Sarah Hepola – Sarah Hepola’s highly-acclaimed memoir of her days of binge-drinking, blacking out, and getting sober.

From Junkie to Judge: One Woman’s Triumph Over Trauma and Addiction, Mary Beth O’Connor – Childhood abuse drove Mary O’Connor to drug use as a teenager and she eventually became an intravenous meth addict. She began her journey to sobriety with rehab and AA, but as an atheist, she struggled with the concepts of a higher power and powerlessness, creating a new path that combined multiple programs. Six years into her recovery, she attended law school. In 2014 she became a federal administrative law judge.

My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands, Chelsea Handler – Chelsea Handler loves men, lots of them. She applies her trademark humor to her descriptions of the highs and lows of her many one-night stands.

Girl Walks Out of a Bar: A Memoir, Lisa Smith – Lisa Smith was a corporate lawyer in New York City addicted to alcohol and cocaine, who describes her road to recovery and healing.

In My Skin: A Memoir of Addiction, Kate Holden – Kate Holden went from a bookish college graduate to a heroin addict who sold her body on the street until she moved up to a high-class brothel. This is the story of how she reclaimed her life.

comeback: a mother and daughter’s journey through hell and back, Claire Fountaine & Mia Fontaine – A great memoir by a mother and daughter about the daughter’s journey from addiction to recovery.

Insatiable: A Memoir of Love Addiction, Shary Hauer – An honest look at love addiction. Unfortunately, the author doesn’t devote enough of the book to recovery from her addiction.

Love Sick: One Woman’s Journey through Sexual Addiction, Sue William Silverman – The author takes us through her 28 days in rehab from sex addiction, with some examples of how she acted on that addiction. She should have talked more about her recovery after rehab.

Ordinary Girls, Jaquira Díaz – Growing up in housing projects in Puerto Rico and Miami, Jaquira survives her mother’s mental illness, violence, sexual assault, poverty, addiction, sexism and racism, to become a successful writer.

Making a Scene, Constance Wu – Actor Constance Wu’s story of growing up in Richmond, Virginia and her path to success on the sitcom Fresh Off the Boat and the hit film Crazy Rich Asians.

The Mother of Black Hollywood: A Memoir – A humorous look at the life of Jennifer Lewis, who has performed in hundreds of film and television roles as the “Mama.” She currenty plays a lovable grandmother in the TV sitcom black-ish.

Flash Point: A Firefighter’s Journey Through PTSD, Christy Warren – Cristy Warren spent twenty-five years as a paramedic and firefighter, until she retired as a Captain because of PTSD from all the trauma she witnessed. Her healing journey is inspirational, especially for first responders.

Cherry, Mary Karr – Mary Karr’s sequel to Liars’ Club focuses on her adolescence and sexual coming-of-age.

How I Became Hettie Jones, Hettie Jones – One of my favorite memoirs about the transformation of Hettie Cohen into a resilient woman who played a role in the creation of the Beat and Jazz scenes in Greenwich Village in the 1950s and 1960s. She faced many challenges as the wife of LeRoi Jones and later as a single parent, while pursuing a career as a writer.

Love is an Ex-Country: A Memoir, Randa Jarrar – Randa identifies herself as a Queer, Muslim, Arab American. She describes a colorful road trip from California to Connecticut, with many interesting stops along the way and a few detours.
